The IRS is Moving to Digital Refunds
The Internal Revenue Service is making a change to the way taxpayers can receive their refunds. This change is coming from an executive order signed by President Trump in 2025. Effective September 30, 2025, you will no longer be able to receive a paper check in the mail for your tax refund. Instead, you will now receive your refund digitally.
Why the change?
The goal of moving to digital payments is to make refunds more efficient, secure, and fast. You will no longer have to wait on the mail to receive your refund. It can now be direct deposited into your bank account. This removes the risk of the check getting lost in the system, in the mail or stolen. Digital payments also allow for easier tracking which should lead to the IRS being able to match payments/refunds easier, and hopefully lead to less correspondence from the IRS.
How will you get your refund?
Starting September 30, 2025, your options for receiving a refund are:
- Direct deposit into your bank account
- Prepaid debit cards
What do you need to do?
To ensure you get your refunds, make sure Welgaard has your bank account information before we are starting your tax return. This can be filled out in our organizer or you can drop off a voided check. Becoming familiar with these options is going to be important. If you do not give Welgaard this info, you will have issues getting your refund and it can also slow down the refund process.
